LAMBING ON HIGHLAND FARM

Photo: Twin lambs born September 2022
Watch Steve on the YouTube clip tagging new-born lambs in 2017.
This needs to be done the same time they are born, otherwise they are too hard to catch.  Steve carries out this routine every year including 2025.
OUR EWES start lambing September through until October.
  • Spring in Rangiwahia is never easy.  We certainly experience some beautiful sunny days, but generally the weather can be tough and changeable with heavy rain, cold, wind, thunderstorms, hail & snow. August 2025 was generally fine, but very cold with multiple frosts. September and October 2025 have been particularly trying with cold, wet days with very little sunshine.
  • Since 2019, we have used a mix of sires  over our flock of ewes.
Only ewes, which have free-lambed and reared their lamb/s successfully, are retained in the flock.
  • We are aiming for sheep, which are quiet, have good mothering ability, scan & rear twins (subjected to severe storms).
  • The sheep also must have a structurally sound confirmation with sloping shoulders, meaty back ends and active.
